Many US apartments are wood-frame; however, wood structures are far less common in other code-permitting applications, including the sub-category known as “big-box” retail. To illustrate the advantages of building with wood, WoodWorks commissioned two studies, one cost comparison and one life cycle assessment, on the same big box project designed in steel vs. wood.

The study showed that wood design outperforms steel in terms of cost and environmental performance. In terms of cost, wood offers nearly $1 million in savings (22%), primarily through the structure cost savings ($425,000) and roof insulation savings ($400,000). In terms of the environment, wood performs better than steel in five out of six impact categories.
