Manufacturing Processes

OSB - No. MDP-07-041
Determining the feasibility of extracting OSB flakes from sawmill MPB residues as an alternative to converting to pulp chips. The project includes collecting and testing mill waste samples (slabs, edgings, trim block and log trims) using existing German “superchip” technology and through the current Canadian supplier of stranding equipment used in OSB mills. The project will also involve a detailed survey of non-integrated BC interior sawmills to determine their anticipated residual fibre availability for conversion to OSB flakes and an economic assessment of the potential for this type of residual conversion.

OSB - No. MDP-07-033
Further development of an on-line optical detection system to measure the level of fine OSB strands developed during the strand production from MPB killed fibre. A previously developed Forintek optical scanning system will be tested in a larger scale pilot plant and an OSB mill environment to evaluate and quantify the benefits of using this new technology to reduce MPB fines and improve OSB board quality.

Lumber - No. MDP-07-023
Conducting dry kiln trials and developing drying schedules for MPB lumber for use in small volume community- based dry kilns. These schedules will be specifically developed to produce low moisture content MPB lumber for use in the value-added and secondary manufacturing industries for interior finishing products such as flooring and furniture components.

Composite Panels - No. MDP-07-018
Assessing the chemical characteristics and technical properties of grey stage MPB fibre to determine the effects on manufacturing OSB, MDF and particleboard. The project will build on the findings of the initial study of bondability characteristics of this MPB fibre type and will evaluate and try to improve the properties of OSB, MDF and particleboard panels manufactured from this grey-stage wood. Different MPB wood mix ratios will be tested in the panel manufacturing process.

Lumber - No. MDP-07-017
Determining the best sawing practices and saw designs for manufacturing MPB killed logs through laboratory and full-scale sawmill cutting tests. The project will assess the effects MPB killed logs have on sawing speed, material wear, power required and sawn lumber accuracy to determine a best sawing practice.

Lumber - No. MDP-07-016
Completing development of a vision/scanning system to be used for optimal positioning of MPB dry checked logs. The project will assess the accuracy of check modeling in the Forintek developed log breakdown simulation program and its ability to accurately estimate the lumber value recoveries for use in log positioning optimization programs.

Plywood - No. MDP-07-015
Developing and testing a new hot-pressing method for plywood/LVL production and assessing the new method relative to the conventional pressing of veneer produced from MPB affected logs, SPF veneer and Douglas Fir veneer. Pilot plant, full-scale tests and a full BC plywood mill trial will be completed to establish an optimum hot-pressing schedule and quantify the benefits of the developed hot-pressing method.
