FII-MDP-09-0054 Mill Trials of In-refiner Bleaching of Mechanical Pulps Made from MPB-infested Lodgepole Pine [New]
A project to determine the ideal chemical and alkali composition for in-refiner bleaching of TMP made predominantly from MPB-infested chips. Prior year funding work on the subject discovered that in-refiner bleaching is capable of overcoming the ISO brightness ceiling. FPInnovations – Paprican Division

FII-MDP-09-0078 Improving the properties of thermomechanical pulp from dry, grey-stage, beetle-killed lodgepole pine [New]
This project investigates the potential change in strength properties of thermomechanical pulp (TMP), by introducing very dry chips (<10% MC) from grey-stage lodgepole pine to the pulping process. FPInnovations – Paprican Division

Grey-stage Fibre Trial – Princeton Sawmill [New]
A trial at a Princeton sawmill that further documents lumber and value recovery losses experienced when processing lodgepole pine logs, attacked by mountain pine beetle at least five years ago.

Marginal Log Sensitivity Analysis for Mountain Pine Beetle Killed Lodgepole Pine Logs [New]
This project undertakes to identify a relationship between check damage and recovery in MPB-attacked lodgepole pine logs, to allow for partitioning into broad check classes. It also develops a practical spreadsheet tool for BC interior sawmills to use to determine expected profitability when processing MPB-attacked logs based on severity of check classes.
